US Open Championship commonly known as the United States Open is the annual golf tournament of the United States established in 1895. US Open championship is conducted by the (USGA) United States Golf Association. This championship was not held from 1917 to 1918 due to World War I and from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II respectively.

US Open is the one of the four major championships. The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895 at the Newport Country Club in Newport. It was a 36-hole competition and was played in a single day. Horace Rawlins was the first winner of US Open Championship. US open tournament was dominated by experienced British players until 1911 when John J. McDermott became the first native-born American winner. American golfers soon began to win regularly and the tournament evolved to become one of the four majors.

Since 1911, the title has been won almost exclusively by players from the United States. Then the players from only six countries other than the United States have won the championship, most notably South Africa, which has won five times from 1950 to 1965. The champion receives a gold champion's medal, and the U.S. Open Championship Cup, which the winner is allowed to keep for a year.

Hale Irwin is the oldest winner of the US Open. He was 45 years 15 days old when he won in 1990 and John McDermott is the youngest winner of the US Open who was 19 years 315 days old when he won in 1911.

In 1954, the US Open marked the first national television coverage. Coverage was expanded by ABC Sports in 1977 so that all 18 holes of the final two rounds were broadcast live. In 1982, on the ESPN cable network, the first two rounds were broadcast live for the first time. NBC began televising the US Open in 1995.
