Motor Racing was started in France after the construction of the first successful gasoline fueled automobiles. The firse Motor Race was organised by Le Petit Journal on 22 July 1894. It was run over the 128 Kilo Meter distance between Paris and Rouen. The first Motor Race was won by Jules de Dion.

In June 1907, Brooklands in Surrey was first venue built for Motor Racing. It featured a 4.43 km concrete track with high-speed banked corners. In 1939, this track was closed as war time aircraft production took over. Damage done to the track during World War II meant the track never reopened for racing.
