Overview

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is to be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international association football tournament that is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014.

This is to be the second time Brazil has hosted the competition, the first being the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Brazil is scheduled to become the fifth country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup twice, after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany. It is scheduled to be the first World Cup to be held in South America since the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged outside Europe and the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged in the Southern Hemisphere (the 2010 FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa).

Brazil, the Country

For hundreds of years, Brazil has symbolised the great escape into a primordial, tropical paradise, igniting the Western imagination like no other South American country. From the mad passion of Carnaval to the immensity of the dark Amazon, it is a country of mythic proportions.

There are stretches of unexplored rainforest, islands with pristine tropical beaches, and endless rivers. And there are the people themselves, who delight the visitor with their energy and joy.

Two-thirds of Brazil’s population lives near the coast, meaning that life is a beach for locals and tourists alike. People are the essence of the country, and while Brazil is home to a multitude of ethnic groups of varying economic status, there are some characteristics that everyone shares – energy and passion. It’s not all reserved for football either; Brazilians enjoy a good party whatever the circumstances.

Brazil is known as the Carnival Country. Dancers gyrate, the music beats and the summer temperature rises. Almost anything goes. Bodies of all ages, colours and sizes don the very minimum in beachwear and idle away the days on the sun-kissed Copacabana, Ipanema and hundreds of other beatiful beaches. Volleyball, swimming and people-watching are but a few of the activities in which you can indulge.

Brazil’s landscape is as diverse as the people who inhabit it. A rich colonial history exists, and the town of Parati is an exquisite example of eighteenth-century Portuguese architecture. The jungles and rivers of the Amazon, home to lush vegetation and exotic wildlife, incite notions of exploration amongst the intrepid, while the thundering Iguacu Falls are simply a spectacular wonder. Brazil’s massive assortment of people and places renders it ripe for choice.

Football in Brazil

The Brazil national football team (in Portuguese: Seleção Brasileira) represents Brazil in international men's football Brazil is made by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), the governing body for football in Brazil. They are a member of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) since 1923 and also a member of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) since 1916. Brazil is the most successful national football team in the history of the FIFA World Cup, with five championships. They are also the most successful team in the FIFA Confederations Cup with three titles. At continental level, Brazil has won eight Copa América titles.

Brazil is currently considered to be among the strongest football nations in the world, and has also been marked as one of the most competitive teams of each decade since the 1960s. Brazil are the only national team to have played in every World Cup.

Brazil is the only team to have won the championship in four different continents; once in Europe (1958 Sweden), once in South America (1962 Chile), twice in North America (1970 Mexico and 1994 United States) and once in Asia (2002 Korea/Japan). A common quip about football is: "Os ingleses o inventaram, os brasileiros o aperfeiçoaram" ("The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it").

Brazil is currently coached by Mano Menezes, who was appointed to replace Dunga after the 2010 World Cup. Brazil is scheduled to host the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup and therefore, they are automatically qualified for the tournaments.
