French Open Tennis Hospitality : More Information

The French Open is very famous tennis tournament played in Paris, France.  This tournament is played in the summer for two weeks from the end of May to the first few days of June. French Open is the second Grand Slam tournaments on the annual tennis calendar and the premier clay court tennis tournament in the world.

On a clay court the ball bounces much slower and higher than on hard or grass courts. Many players like Venus Williams, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Andy Roddick and  Maria Sharapova have won multiple Grand Slam events but they never won the French Open. On the other hand Rafael Nadal, Mats Wilander and Justine Henin have won because these players are more suited to slower surface. These players are called clay court specialists.

French Open is one of the most prestigious events in tennis. Because of the slow playing surface and the five set men's singles matches without a tiebreak in the final set, the event is widely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

In 1891, French national tournament began only for the players who were members of French clubs and called “French club members only” tournament. This tournament was played until 1924. Then in 1925, the French Championships opened to international competitors but on grass surface. In 1968, the French Championships became the first Grand Slam tournament. In March 2007, it was announced that the tournaments will provide equal prize money for both men and women in all rounds.

In 2009, the winners were Roger Federer for men’s single and Svetlana Kuznetsova for women’s single. In French Open 2010, Rafael and Francesca Schiavone are the winners.
